The bipartisan group of Senators working on immigration legislation hope to unveil a bill next week.
From there, the timeline for moving to a vote has not been decided. A key member of the so-called gang of eight, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, is demanding full and careful consideration of any immigration measure.
A spokesperson for Rubio says he wants public hearings, a committee markup and an amendment process on the floor. Rubio believes that’s key to building and maintaining conservative support for a comprehensive immigration rewrite.
The Senator’s spokesperson added that it’s important for people to understand what is, and what is not, in the bill. A Democratic aide says nothing Rubio wants contradicts what others in the group are thinking, stating that all of the Senators want an open process.
