Vilsack: Ag Census Gives Farmers Powerful Voice

The only source of consistent and comprehensive agricultural data for every state and county across the nation is the Census of Agriculture.

It is currently being mailed to millions of farmers and ranchers across the country.

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is encouraging all farmers to promptly complete and return their Census.
He says the Census provides farmers with a powerful voice to share the value and importance of agriculture. Vilsack notes the information gathered through the Census influences policy decisions that can have a tremendous impact on farmers and their communities for years to come.

In addition to affecting policy decisions - Vilsack says the data gathered in the Census influences community growth and development. He says many companies review Census data when determining where to establish or expand their businesses - as well as where they can go for supplies of locally-produced food and agricultural products. Given the challenges farmers face in their local areas - Secretary Vilsack says the Census is becoming increasingly important. He says it helps tell the true story about the state of agriculture in the U.S. today.

The Census of Agriculture is conducted by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service every five years. It provides detailed data covering nearly every facet of U.S. agriculture. USDA says it looks at land use and ownership, production practices, expenditures and other factors that affect the way farmers do business and succeed in the 21st Century. All farmers and ranchers should receive a Census from in the mail by early January.

Completed forms are due by the 4th of February. Forms can be returned by mail or online at Agcensus.  Federal law requires all ag producers to participate in the Census and requires NASS to keep all individual information confidential.
