Davenport Making Better use of Downed Trees

(AP) - Crews in Davenport are trying to make better use of downed limbs and branches by turning the wood into benches and lumber.

Iin past years, fallen trees would have been ground into mulch.

But since Chris Johnson was hired as arborist/forestry manager three years ago, the city has taken a different approach.

Now crews look to make some use of the wood.

Workers have made benches on rainy days when they can't work outside and sold the items for $150 to $300 at a farmers market. They also have cut downed cherry, oak and black walnut into boards.

Johnson says more cities are starting wood reutilization efforts. He says the idea started in the East, where communities were dealing with emerald ash borer infestations.
