Grand Champion and Reserve Pen of Chickens Announced

SEDALIA, Mo.) – Hannah Bruse, daughter of Brad and Pam Bruse, is the exhibitor of the 2013 Grand Champion Pen of Chickens at the Missouri State Fair. Hannah is a member of the Moss Rangers 4-H Club in Princeton. Her prize-winning Cornish Cross chickens weighed an average of 6.5 pounds.

The Reserve Grand Champion Pen of Chickens honor went to Vivian Buie, daughter of Dan and Rebecca Buie. Her Cornish Cross chickens weighed an average of 5.3 pounds. Vivian is a member of the Work to Win 4-H Club in Marshall.

On Aug. 17, both Hannah Bruse and Vivian Buie will sell their pen of chickens in two of 12 lots offered in the Youth in Agriculture (YIA) Sale of Champions. Proceeds from the annual sale benefit both the winning exhibitors and the Missouri State Fair YIA Scholarship Program.

Through the generous support of YIA sponsors, the Missouri State Fair is able to award scholarships to Missouri youth pursuing a degree in an agriculture-related field. Last year, thirty-six $1,000 scholarships and one supreme $2,500 scholarship were awarded to youth across Missouri. Since 1992, 436 Missouri youth have received more than $361,000 in scholarships.

“The success of the Sale is credited to the support from Missouri Youth in Agriculture sponsors,” said Wayne Yokley, Chairman of the YIA Committee, and Superintendent of the Sale of Champions. “Their donations help ensure we are able to continue supporting our young people as they grow in agriculture and pursue higher education.”
