House Agrees to Farm Bill Conference



(NAFB)--The House passed a motion Friday to go to conference with the Senate on the farm bill.

The same day - the House bgan debate of the House resolution that would urge farm bill conferees to adopt an amendment in the Senate farm bill to reduce crop insurance subsidies for farmers making more than 750-thousand dollars per year. The House passed by voice vote a resolution instructing House conferees to support a Senate farm bill provision to include this crop insurance change. House Ag Chair Frank Lucas says the resolution - sponsored by Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin and Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn - would shrink the pool of crop insurance participants and lessen the total crop insurance premiums contributed to the pool to make payments when farmers have a loss. The House alo began debate Friday on a resolution to repeal the Administration of Tariff Rate Quotas language added by the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 - restoring the Ag Secretary's authority to manage supplies of sugar throughout the marketing year to meet domestic demand at reasonable prices. Saturday - the House voted down the resolution to change the sugar program by a vote of 192 to 212.
