U.S. Government Will Fine Texas Fertilizer Plant

(NAFB)--The west Texas fertilizer plant that exploded in April has been cited for 24 health and safety violations. The violations include the unsafe handling and storage of ammonium nitrate fertilizer and carry fines of more than 118-thousand dollars. California Senator Barbara Boxer - who chairs the Senate Environment Committee - recently made the announcement because the statute of limitations on filing violations could run out during the partial government shutdown. Boxer said the fines should serve as a warning to other plant operators to follow safety rules. A broader investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing - but has been delayed by the government shutdown.
