An Option for Soybean Growers as Desire to Eliminate Trans Fats Increases



(NAFB)--Before the issue of trans fats even surfaced - Pioneer started working to develop an improved high oleic soybean oil profile that could dramatically improve oil functionality and grow soybean demand. Twenty years of research and development investments resulted in Plenish-high oleic soybean oil with zero trans fat. In 2014 - soybean growers in the U.S. will have an expanded lineup of Plenish soybean varieties for the high oleic oil market. DuPont Pioneer Director of Food and Industry Markets Russ Sanders says Plenish high oleic soybeans will help soybean growers recapture lost soybean oil markets that have moved to trans-fat-free oils. The Food and Drug Administration announced plans to require labeling of trans fats in the nation’s food supply in 2003 - resulting in a significant reduction in demand for soybean oil in food applications. Then recently - the FDA took the first steps toward eliminating artificial trans fats from food products. Sanders says ongoing connectivity and collaboration with the soybean industry - including the United Soybean Board’s high oleic growth initiative - reinforces the company’s confidence that this product concept answers marketplace demand.

Pioneer is working with major soybean processors to produce Plenish. The biotechnology trait for Plenish oil is approved in the U.S. and in 94-percent of export markets. The European Union is the only major exception. Plenish soybeans are grown and marketed under identity-preserved contracting programs.
