Cards swept by Jays with 5-2 loss ahead of big NL Central road series

The St. Louis Cardinals won’t be heading into a National League Central clash on the road with momentum, after being swept by the Toronto Blue Jays at home, falling 5-2 in the series finale Wednesday afternoon.

The Cardinals did open the scoring in the game, and held the lead through the first two innings.  Willson Contreras singled in the first inning to drive in Masyn Winn, who had singled earlier in the inning, to open the scoring.  St. Louis extended the lead, and scored their final run, in the second inning on a solo home run by Yohel Pozo.

The Blue Jays tied up the game in the third inning though, first cutting the lead in half on a single by Bo Bichette that drove in Tyler Heineman.  A sacrifice fly by George Springer later in the inning scored Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the tying run.   In the fourth inning, Bichette’s sacrifice fly brought home Myles Straw for the go ahead run, and the lead was extended in the following at bat on a single by Guerrero Jr, scoring Jonatan Clase.

Toronto scored their final run in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Ernie Clement off of Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore, his fourth home run of the season.

Liberatore took the loss, falling to 3-6 on the season, pitching five innings and giving up all five runs, just three earned, on eight hits while striking out four and walking one.  At the plate, Contreras was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Victor Scott II was 2-for-4.  Three other Cardinals managed just one hit a piece, including Pozo with the solo home run who was 1-for-4.

St. Louis will now hit the road and travel to Milwaukee for a National League Central clash with the Brewers.  Sonny Gray (7-1, 3.35 ERA) takes the mound for the Cardinals against the Brewers top top pitching prospect, and #4 overall prospect, making his major league debut in Jacob Misiorowski.  First pitch is at 6:40pm, pregame will be joined at 6:30 on KY 102 (102.5 FM).
