Cardinals offense sputters against Pirates in 8-3 loss

By MATT PIKE

Henry Davis homered, Bryan Reynolds hit a pair of doubles and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-3 on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium evening up the three game series between the NL Central foes.

Davis hit his sixth home run of the season in the third inning to give Pittsburgh an 8-0 lead.

Nolan Gorman hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, his 13th of the season in the fourth inning.  Willson Contreras drove in the Redbirds only other run of the game on a groundout in the sixth inning, scoring Lars Nootbaar.

Contreras was suspended for six games and fined an undisclosed amount for his tirade during the St. Louis Cardinals’ 7-6 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night, but informed Major League Baseball he will appeal the suspension, which means it will not take effect immediately. He was in the lineup for Tuesday night’s game against the Pirates.

Contreras threw a bat that mistakenly hit Cardinals hitting coach Brant Brown and tossed bubble gum on the field after he was ejected. Manager Oliver Marmol also was tossed during an animated argument with the umpires after a called third strike in the seventh inning.

Contreras said he didn’t understand why he was thrown out of the game. He said he argued balls and strikes with plate umpire Derek Thomas but didn’t address a specific pitch and didn’t say anything disrespectful.

Mitch Keller (6-12) allowed three runs on three hits and struck out nine in six innings for the Pirates, who have won five of six.  Andre Pallante took the loss for the Cardinals, falling to 6-12. allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and a walk in five innings. He is 0-4 with a 11.65 ERA over 17 innings in his last four starts.

At the plate, Gorman was 1-for-4 with the home run and two RBIs.  Alec Burleson and Iván Herrera also had one hit each as the Cardinals managed just five baserunners overall against the Pirates in the loss.

St. Louis and Pittsburgh wrap up their series tomorrow.  Sonny Gray (12-6, 4.33) takes the mound for the Cardinals against Carmen Mlodzinski (3-7, 3.89 ERA) for the Pirates.  First pitch is at 6:45pm, coverage begins at 6:35 on KY 102 (102.5 FM).
