A 23-year-old has been charged with armed carjacking after allegedly stealing a car Sunday morning in the 800 block of South 24th Street in St. Joseph.

The suspect, Devontra Hughes, also faces the possibility of additional charges after allegedly shooting a man in the hand and fleeing from police before his capture at a major St. Joseph intersection.

The St. Joseph Police Department reports the victim said the suspect pointed a gun at him before driving off with his 2014 Honda Accord shortly before 7:30 Sunday morning. Later that morning, a disturbance call came in to the St. Joseph Comm Center. Police say Hughes allegedly shot a man in the hand in the 4500 block of Orchard Road, then fled in the stolen vehicle.

The car fled to Andrew County and took off when Savannah police attempted to stop it. The pursuit ended when the suspect crashed near Frederick Avenue and I-29. Hughes was taken into custody. Officers located a handgun and a loaded magazine.
