McGreevy sharp as Cardinals shut out Reds 3-0 to even up series

Michael McGreevy pitched seven sharp innings, Thomas Saggese hit a two-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Brendan Donovan doubled leading off the first and scored on Nolan Arenado’s sacrifice fly. Alec Burleson singled in the third and was aboard for Saggese’s homer.

McGreevy improved to 7-3 earning the win, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out six in those seven innings. The rookie right-hander threw 91 pitches.  A pair of relievers finished the three-hitter.  Riley O’Brien earned his fifth save with a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the Cardinals’ 13th shutout this season.

At the plate, Saggese was 2-for-4 with the home run and two RBIs.  Pedro Pagés was 2-for-3 .St. Louis remained 4 1/2 games back of the Mets with 10 to play. The Cardinals also need to climb over Arizona and San Francisco.

St. Louis wraps up their series with Cincinnati on Wednesday.  Andre Pallante (6-14, 5.34) takes the mound for the Cardinals in the finale against former Royals pitcher Brady Singer (13-10, 3.94 ERA) for the Reds.  First pitch is at 12:15pm, coverage begins at 12:05 on KY 102 (102.5 FM).
