Cardinals keep playoff hopes alive with 6-5 series opening win over Giants

Iván Herrera hit a game tying two-run homer in the decisive fifth inning before St. Louis scored the go-ahead run on San Francisco second baseman Casey Schmitt’s error and Jordan Walker added an RBI groundout, sending the Cardinals past the Giants 6-5 on Monday night at Oracle Park.

Michael McGreevy, who improved to 8-3 earning the win, allowed five runs on six hits over five innings. The right-hander came in with an 11-inning scoreless streak, but that ended when he surrendered a leadoff home run to Heliot Ramos to begin his outing.

The Cardinals tied up the game in the third inning on an RBI single by Alec Burleson, driving in José Fermín.  The Redbirds took the lead in the very next inning on a double by Fermín that scored Walker.  But in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Giants tied the game up and took the lead with a three run inning.  An RBI single from Patrick Bailey drove in Matt Chapman for the tying run.  Bailey later scored, along with Schmitt on a single by Ramos.

Herrera’s home run in the fifth inning tied the game back up for the Cardinals, scoring Lars Nootbaar.  Burleson scored the go ahead run on Schmitt’s error as Pedro Pagés reached on the fielder’s choice in the inning before Walker’s RBI single extended the lead for the final run of the game for the Cardinals, scoring Nolan Arenado.  Rafael Devers homered leading off the Giants’ half of the fifth for the final Giants run

JoJo Romero, the fifth St. Louis pitcher, tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save.  At the plate, Burleson was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.  Fermín was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, also scoring a run.  Herrera was 1-for-3 with the home run and two walks, driving in two runs.

St. Louis and San Francisco play the middle of a three game series on Tuesday.  Andre Pallante (6-14, 5.23 ERA) pitches for the Cardinals opposite Logan Webb (14-11, 3.27) for the Giants.  First pitch is at 8:45pm, coverage will begin around 8:35 on KY 102 (102.5 FM).
