Buchanan County sheriff’s deputies cited 21 registered sex offenders for violated the state Halloween statute this year.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office reports it conducted 252 Halloween sex offender compliance checks Halloween night. Deputies found 210 compliant with 37 at work. Seventeen homeless sex offenders reported to the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office in downtown St. Joseph until 10:30 that night.
In addition to the 21 citations for violating the Halloween statute, two were cited for residency violations.
State law prohibits registered sex offenders from engaging in Halloween activities, including passing out candy to trick or treaters.
Buchanan County has 306 registered sex offenders.
The compliance checks Halloween night were led by Investigator Kenny Shryock and Sex Offender Analyst Cindy Ownby. Thirty-four deputies were assisted by three sheriff’s office administrative aides, one member of the St. Joseph Police Department, and a Deputy United States Marshal.
