Agrochemical maker Bayer has announced a proposed $7.25 billion settlement to resolve thousands of U.S. lawsuits alleging that its weedkiller Roundup can cause cancer. The settlement comes as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments on Bayer’s claim that the EPA’s approval of Roundup should invalidate state court claims. Bayer disputes the link between Roundup’s glyphosate ingredient and cancer but is facing mounting legal costs. The proposed settlement, filed in a Missouri court, aims to provide closure for the company and affected patients.
