A single-vehicle wreck on U.S. 73 Highway in Atchison County involved 38-year-old Catherine Smith, who was found with open containers of alcohol, suspected methamphetamine, a THC vape pen, and drug paraphernalia in her car. Smith was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and later arrested on charges including driving under the influence and drug possession. In a separate incident, 18-year-old William Grippin was cited for driving nearly 100 mph in a 65 mph zone in Atchison County. The issue of high-speed drivers exceeding 100 mph has been a recurring problem in the area.
