The St. Joseph School District Board of Education has approved two new vocational programs at Hillyard Technical Center, aviation mechanics and law and public safety, designed to bridge local labor gaps starting in 2026.
The aviation mechanics program, specifically focusing on airframes, was developed following consultations with the 139th Airlift Wing and Rosecrans Air National Guard Base. Military and civilian representatives identified a critical regional shortage of certified aircraft technicians, prompting the district to fast-track the curriculum.
District officials stated the expansion aims to provide students with high-demand career pathways while offering articulation agreements that allow participants to earn free college credit through partner post-secondary institutions.
The initial cohort is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2026, with a second group following in 2027.
The programs are open to students within the St. Joseph School District.
