The Mount Mora Cemetery in St. Joseph, Missouri, was vandalized on Monday, with dozens of gravestones and headstones toppled over and broken. Vandals allegedly gained entry by wedging open a corner of the fence, causing most of the damage in that area. Preservationists and volunteers are shocked and disheartened by the vandalism, with cleanup efforts set to begin once the shock wears off. No estimates on the damage or cleanup costs have been provided, leaving preservationists questioning why such an act occurred. The last vandalism incident at the cemetery was in 2006, with the perpetrators being caught by law enforcement.
