The St. Joseph Police Department is warning area residents about an ongoing jury duty scam.

SJPD posted on Facebook that scammers may call and claim you missed jury duty and now owe fines or face arrest. They often pressure victims to pay immediately using gift cards, prepaid cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.

Officials says courts and law enforcement will not call to demand payment and they will never be threaten anyone with arrest over the phone for jury duty, as legitimate jury notices are sent by mail.

If you receive a scam call, hang up immediately and never send money or share personal information with the scammer.

If you believe you’ve been targeted or victimized, contact the St. Joseph Police Department using the non-emergency line at 816-271-4777.
