Missouri lawmakers are considering a bill that would prohibit residents from registering their vehicles in other states to avoid paying registration fees in Missouri. State Rep. Ed Lewis introduced the legislation in response to a growing trend of Missourians registering their vehicles in Montana to evade taxes. The bill would impose a $500 fine on those caught registering vehicles out of state for this purpose and could result in a driver’s license suspension. Additionally, individuals found making false statements about registering their vehicles out of state would be fined 75% of the registration fees they would have paid in Missouri. The proposal also includes a four-month amnesty period for individuals with out-of-state registered vehicles to bring them into compliance with Missouri law.
