State Rep. Brenda Shields, R-St. Joseph, is pushing for new legislation aimed at expanding childcare accessibility across Missouri through a series of targeted financial incentives.
The proposed bill establishes three distinct tax credits designed to support childcare providers and encourage employers to offer childcare assistance to their staff. The legislative package is capped at a total annual budget of $20 million.
Proponents of the measure say the credits will stimulate investment in a sector currently struggling with capacity, ultimately reducing the financial burden on Missouri families and stabilizing the local workforce.
The three-pronged approach includes:
- Provider Credits: Incentives for childcare facilities to expand operations or improve quality standards.
- Employer Credits: Support for businesses that provide on-site childcare or subsidize tuition for employees.
- Contribution Credits: Incentives for taxpayers who make private donations to childcare programs.
The bill is currently moving through the legislative process in Jefferson City as lawmakers weigh the economic impact of childcare shortages on the state’s recovery and growth.
