Hiawatha city crews to install utilities for new housing development

Hiawatha city crews will handle utility installation for a new housing development west of Bruning Park, as approved by the City Commission in a four-to-one vote. Public Works Director Dominic Grier expressed confidence in the city crews’ ability to complete the water and sewer line installation. City Administrator Brad Scott estimated a cost savings of approximately $150,000 by using city crews instead of contracting the work out. The project is expected to take about a month to complete, with the city still needing to hire someone for construction observation as required by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for the sewer installation.
